On one of our weekly Store Design calls, we had a very excited Todd Snyder on the other end of the Zoom. The business had secured the holy grail of New York City retail real estate: a corner of Rockefeller Center overlooking the ice-skating rink. We were awed, inspired and grateful to be asked to work on this project with Todd and his team. This was to be the New York flagship of the fleet of stores that we have worked on with Todd since he opened his first store on Madison Square.
Nicholas jumped on a plane and was in New York the next day to see the space so we could start to understand floorplans, ceiling heights and the “feel” of the space: the former 5,000sq ft Lego global flagship store. Unique to New York was the multi split-levels, with the main spaces souring past 20 foot high.
It was a challenging floor plan at the beginning, as we needed to maximize the selling capacity as well as create storage within the store since there is no traditional stockroom.
For the look of the store, we presented a few color options: our classic TSNY olive palette; a grey palette; and a more teal-based blue color with highlights of yellow and tan. Todd loved them all and decided that we would do one color palette for each room.
The floor plan began to take shape with the “rooms” idea dictating the space and creating clear merchandising zones for the product categories, including an Aesop outpost, a space for suiting, and area for the Todd Snyder collaboration with Champion.
For the decor, we did a mix of traditional English nods, a Jamb made fireplace, William Morris wallpapers, and some mid-century pieces sourced by both our team and the TSNY team. Artwork by one of Todd’s favorite artist, Ryan McMenamy, was commissioned for the large space above the fireplace and wool fabrics for the fitting rooms were supplied by Rose Uniacke.
The store opened for the Holiday season just in time to see the famous tree lighting and the opening of the ice-skating rink….from the midst of the sales floor.
