COUNTRY COTTAGE
CONNECTICUT
This 1940’s country cottage located in Litchfeild, Connecticut was a former caretakers cottage. When we started working on the home, it had been semi-renovated by a previous owner. We decided to work on a few main areas namely the kitchen and master bathroom.
For the kitchen, we decided, after much thought, to keep the home’s original sink and work around it. We dropped a new ceiling and updated the lights; a new slate floor replaced the lineolium flooring which was previously there. A new counter island was built with a local woodworker creating a new focal countertop to warm up the space.
The master bathroom was rather small. We reworked the plan several times before deciding to move the roof out to create a dormer which gave the space more height and allowed us to push the room back three feet and add a new tub.
To help continue the sense of history, we went back to our friend Anthony Outred in London in search of a complete set of beehive doorknobs from the 1850’s and a new (rather large) front door handle from the late 18th century for the front door. For continuity we also lacquered all of the doors in the house using our favourite Fine Paints of Europe Black gloss paint.
