On a bright Monday morning, James was called into the Club Monaco CEO’s office; he was smiling and clearly very excited to tell him something. “We just signed the lease on a space in Southampton!”. We were thrilled! Until he told us the caveout - the store needed to open in two months…..
We started the design by looking at the neighbourhood - we all knew that it could not just be another clothing store; it had to be special and highly curated for the Southampton customers who are world traveled and not easily impressed.
It was decided to open with a narrow palette of clothing (white, beige, with a sprinkle of navy for men) we also wanted to add some home product- ever since opening the Fifth Avenue store, we had received almost daily request to purchase vintage lighting, artwork and mirrors right off the shop floor.
With this in mind, and a limited time to complete the store, we started with the basics- the entire store would be painted white with a mix of matte and high-gloss finishes. The fixtures would be under-stated and simple. We also decided to make a quick trip to London to purchase some vintage home items to sell in the store- mirrors, silver from our favourite dealer on Portobella Road and candles from our friend Rachel Vosper.
The store, which was intended to be a pop up, was a success- nearly all the mirrors sold out in one weekend- and the brand ended up staying in the space; it also set the tone for other resort community shops for the brand.
